How to Calculate How Much Mulch You Need

Mulch is sold by the cubic yard (bulk delivery) or by the bag (typically 1.5–2 cubic feet each). Getting the right amount saves money and prevents under-mulching — which lets weeds through — or over-mulching, which can suffocate plants and rot root systems.

The Mulch Formula

Step 1 — Area

Area (sq ft) = Length × Width

Step 2 — Cubic Feet

Cubic Feet = Area × (Depth in inches ÷ 12)

Step 3 — Cubic Yards

Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27

Step 4 — Bags

Bags = Cubic Feet ÷ Bag Size (usually 2 cu ft)

Example: A 10 × 20 ft bed at 3 in depth = 200 sq ft × 0.25 ft = 50 cu ft = 1.85 cu yd ≈ 25 bags (2 cu ft each). Not sure of your bed's square footage? Use our square footage calculator first.

Choosing the Right Mulch

Shredded Hardwood

Affordable, long-lasting, great weed suppression

Best for: Flower beds, trees, shrubs

Pine Bark

Slow to decompose, good drainage, acidifies soil

Best for: Acid-loving plants (azalea, blueberry)

Cedar

Natural insect repellent, aromatic, slow to break down

Best for: Areas near patios, vegetable gardens

Rubber Mulch

Extremely durable, doesn't decompose, stays in place

Best for: Playgrounds, high-traffic paths

Straw / Hay

Cheap, lightweight, great for vegetable gardens

Best for: Vegetable beds, erosion control

Compost

Feeds soil, improves structure, sustainable

Best for: All garden beds (best for soil health)

Bulk vs. Bagged Mulch

Bulk Delivery

  • ✅ Cheaper for large projects (>3 yd³)
  • ✅ Delivered by truck or dump trailer
  • ✅ Typical cost: $30–$65 per cubic yard
  • ❌ Minimum order (usually 1–2 yards)
  • ❌ Requires wheelbarrow for spreading

Bagged Mulch

  • ✅ No minimum, easy to store
  • ✅ Convenient for small areas
  • ✅ Typical cost: $4–$8 per 2 cu ft bag
  • ❌ More expensive per cubic yard
  • ❌ Heavy lifting, more trips from store
💡 Tip: Break-even point is roughly 2–3 cubic yards. Below that, bags may be more convenient. Above that, bulk delivery almost always saves money.
